In the summer of 2006 I had a planned trip with my sister and some friends with a road-trip from Phoenix to Sedona to the Grand Canyon and finally ending in Las Vegas- overall it was one of the my better personal vacations- and it was for the first week of July. However in June Arizona was hit by a number of wildfires- a very rough year- and the fires began closing in on Sedona. Although I could not fight the fire myself (they frown on untrained volunteers) I still wanted to be there. I heard the tourist industry was taking a hit- people canceling vacation and whatnot so I knew I didn't need to worry about reservations. I just decided to fly out for a Weekend so I ended out out there June 24 and 25h, alone- knowing I would be back with friends and family in just a couple weeks.

Although many of the roads and trails were closed I was happy to be there. Seeing the entire community come together behind the firefighters was amazing. Most businesses had signs out front welcoming and thanking those who were in the mountains 24/7 risking their lives to save the town and save the natural beauty. Firefighting aircraft would fly over and at night you could see the flames in the distance.

They say God created the Grand Canyon, but he lives in Sedona.

    The Schnebly Hill Road
    by Red Rock Admin
Schnebly Hill Road is one of the great scenic drives around Sedona, Arizona. Caution- Schnebly Hill Road is not paved and the surface varies from very muddy to dry dirty/sand to very bumpy hard rocks. A high clearance vesicle is essential and a 4x4 is strongly recommended. Also if you intend to drive the entire road as I suggest from I-17 into Sedona be sure the road is open! There are times of the year and weather/fire conditions that cause the road to be frequently closed.
